|---|---|---|
| worn out | 因長期使用而損壞或變弱 | The zip on my backpack is completely worn out now. |
| on its last legs | 快要完全壞掉 | My laptop has been on its last legs for months. |
| hold up (well) | 隨著時間仍能維持運作或外觀 | Cheap shoes rarely hold up well after a year of daily wear. |
| no longer fit for purpose | 已經無法勝任當初買它要做的事 | The blender is no longer fit for purpose since the blade went blunt. |
| a false economy | 現在省了錢,之後反而花更多 | Buying the cheapest option turned out to be a false economy. |
| built to last | 以耐用為考量製造 | My grandfather’s watch was built to last, unlike most modern ones. |
| a like-for-like replacement | 基本上和舊的一模一樣的新品 | I am not after a like-for-like replacement, just something more reliable. |
| sentimental value | 超出實用價值的情感重要性 | It has a lot of sentimental value, so I have kept it longer than I should. |
| cut corners | 偷工減料或草率製作 | I think the manufacturer cut corners on the stitching. |
| showing its age | 開始顯得老舊或過時 | The sofa is showing its age, especially around the armrests. |
- item: canvas backpack, navy, university logo
- how long: bought four years ago, first term of university
- what’s wrong: zip sticks, strap frayed, no longer waterproof
- replace with: similar size, sturdier zip, maybe leather this time
I would like to talk about my old backpack, which I bought in my first term of university, so I have had it for around four years now. It is a plain navy canvas bag with the university’s logo stitched onto the front pocket, and honestly, it has been through a lot with me — lectures, weekend trips, even a rainy hike I probably should not have taken it on. The trouble is, it is really showing its age at this point. The main zip sticks halfway most of the time, one of the shoulder straps has frayed so badly that I am half expecting it to snap, and it is definitely no longer waterproof, which is a problem given how often it rains where I live. I have thought about getting it repaired, but a cobbler I spoke to said fixing the zip properly would be almost as expensive as a new bag, so it would honestly be a false economy to bother. If I replaced it, I would probably go for something a similar size but with a sturdier, more reliable zip, and maybe leather instead of canvas this time, since it tends to hold up better against the weather. I am a little attached to this one, though, so I have been putting off actually buying a replacement.
- Do people replace things too quickly nowadays?
- Is it better to repair an item or buy a new one?
- How has advertising changed the way people shop for everyday items?
- Do you think products are made to last as long as they used to be?
