例如「becoming successful in life」要講2分鐘,就比「finally passing my driving test on the third attempt」困難得多。
|---|---|---|
| pay off | 努力之後帶來好的結果 | All those extra hours of practice finally paid off. |
| a turning point | 改變事情方向的時刻 | That exam result felt like a turning point for me. |
| against the odds | 儘管情況不利 | I passed against the odds, honestly, given how little time I had. |
| put in the hours | 投入大量時間和心力 | I put in the hours every evening for about three months. |
| a sense of accomplishment | 達成某件事後的自豪感 | It gave me a real sense of accomplishment afterwards. |
| get there in the end | 歷經困難後終於成功 | It took two attempts, but I got there in the end. |
| a hard-won achievement | 要付出很多努力才得到的成功 | It was a hard-won achievement, not something that came easily. |
| exceed expectations | 比預期做得更好 | The results ended up exceeding my own expectations. |
| a stepping stone | 通往更大進展的成就 | It became a stepping stone towards a much bigger goal. |
| stick with it | 儘管困難仍然堅持 | I nearly gave up twice, but I stuck with it. |

I would like to talk about passing my driving test, which happened about two years ago during my final year at university, on what was actually my third attempt. I had failed twice before, both times because of nerves rather than a lack of ability, which honestly made the whole process quite demoralising. Before the third attempt, I decided to take a different approach: I booked extra lessons with an instructor who specialised in helping anxious drivers, and I also practised with my father most weekends for about three months, mainly just to get comfortable rather than to learn anything new. I put in the hours consistently rather than cramming everything into the final week, which I think made a real difference to how calm I felt on the actual day. When I finally passed, it honestly felt like more than just a driving test; it felt like a turning point, proof to myself that I could stick with something difficult instead of giving up after it went wrong the first couple of times. I consider it a genuine success not because passing a driving test is particularly impressive on its own, but because of how much anxiety and self-doubt I had to work through to get there in the end. It has made me more confident about persisting with other difficult things since.
- How do people in your country generally define success?
- Is success more about effort or about natural ability?
- Do you think society places too much emphasis on measurable achievements?
- Can a small, personal achievement matter as much as a public one?
