약한 답변은 “I passed my exam and I was happy”라고 말하고, 강한 답변은 그 뒤에 있던 노력이 실제로 어떠했는지를 설명하며, 그래야 2분을 설득력 있게 채울 수 있습니다.
“becoming successful in life”는 “finally passing my driving test on the third attempt”보다 2분 동안 말하기가 훨씬 어렵습니다.
|---|---|---|
| pay off | 노력한 뒤에 좋은 결과로 이어지다 | All those extra hours of practice finally paid off. |
| a turning point | 방향을 바꾸는 순간 | That exam result felt like a turning point for me. |
| against the odds | 불리한 상황에도 불구하고 | I passed against the odds, honestly, given how little time I had. |
| put in the hours | 상당한 시간과 노력을 들이다 | I put in the hours every evening for about three months. |
| a sense of accomplishment | 무언가를 이루었다는 자부심 | It gave me a real sense of accomplishment afterwards. |
| get there in the end | 어려움을 겪은 끝에 결국 성공하다 | It took two attempts, but I got there in the end. |
| a hard-won achievement | 상당한 노력 끝에야 얻은 성공 | It was a hard-won achievement, not something that came easily. |
| exceed expectations | 기대 이상으로 잘하다 | The results ended up exceeding my own expectations. |
| a stepping stone | 더 큰 발전으로 이어지는 성취 | It became a stepping stone towards a much bigger goal. |
| stick with it | 어려워도 끈기 있게 계속하다 | I nearly gave up twice, but I stuck with it. |

I would like to talk about passing my driving test, which happened about two years ago during my final year at university, on what was actually my third attempt. I had failed twice before, both times because of nerves rather than a lack of ability, which honestly made the whole process quite demoralising. Before the third attempt, I decided to take a different approach: I booked extra lessons with an instructor who specialised in helping anxious drivers, and I also practised with my father most weekends for about three months, mainly just to get comfortable rather than to learn anything new. I put in the hours consistently rather than cramming everything into the final week, which I think made a real difference to how calm I felt on the actual day. When I finally passed, it honestly felt like more than just a driving test; it felt like a turning point, proof to myself that I could stick with something difficult instead of giving up after it went wrong the first couple of times. I consider it a genuine success not because passing a driving test is particularly impressive on its own, but because of how much anxiety and self-doubt I had to work through to get there in the end. It has made me more confident about persisting with other difficult things since.
- How do people in your country generally define success?
- Is success more about effort or about natural ability?
- Do you think society places too much emphasis on measurable achievements?
- Can a small, personal achievement matter as much as a public one?
